Het besparen van energie levert een belangrijke bijdrage aan de reductie van koolstofdioxide en andere milieubelasting. Bij energie denken we vaak in eerste instantie aan het besparen door de vraag naar primaire energie te verminderen. Door thermisch na te isoleren kan de vraag beperkt worden. Soms wel tot 40-60%. De resterende energievraag kunt u vervolgens duurzaam opwekken met bijvoorbeeld warmtepompen of zonnepanelen. Maar uiteindelijk begint het allemaal met een kritische blik naar het programma van eisen voor de werktuigkundige installaties. Bij het opstellen hiervan dient zowel met het historische gebouw, interieur en eventueel collectie, als de (nieuwe) functie (lees: thermisch comfort) rekening te worden gehouden. Met name bij historische gebouwen met een museumfunctie is nog veel winst te boeken.
